What We Believe

Legatum Global Development believes that the sustained prosperity of individuals, communities, societies and nations is determined by people's ability to allocate their human, intellectual and financial resources. Real sustainable development only occurs where individuals are empowered and local bureaucracies, state and national governments create and nurture an environment in which individual talents can flourish and be rewarded. We believe that sustainable prosperity cannot be given; it can only be encouraged and earned.

What We Do

We seek to promote prosperity in three main ways:

  • Humanitarian Grants. We fund community-based humanitarian projects run by local social entrepreneurs focused on our priority sectors of Health, Education, Economic Empowerment, Human Liberty, Disaster Recovery and the Environment.
  • Venture Capital. We engage in "double bottom line" investing. We incubate and invest in entrepreneurs and companies that produce extraordinary "social returns" while generating financial returns that allow them to be self-sustainable and us to recycle our existing funds into new opportunities. Traditional social returns include providing goods, services and opportunities for the poor. But equally important, we seek opportunities to invest in innovative technologies and approaches that drive a more efficient "social marketplace," flattening the world and reducing transaction costs for donors and recipients, investors and entrepreneurs alike.
  • Policy Advocacy & Advisory. We fund and engage in advocacy and advisory work that focuses on removing policy-related impediments to prosperity.
