Grants

Legatum Global Development manages a group of subsidiary organisations focused on empowering individuals to unleash their productive potential. One of these subsidiaries has invested more than $67 million in a wide range of humanitarian activities resulting in grants to 1,500 development projects in over 110 countries that have materially changed the lives of 5.8 million people over the past nine years.

Our strategy includes funding projects in our priority sectors and on influencing the development of a more efficient philanthropic marketplace. Within our sector-based approach, we seek to obtain the highest possible "returns on investment" by allocating capital to the most effective humanitarian projects and programmes that we can find while requiring investment-grade levels of transparency and accountability from our grantees.

Our priority sectors are:

Creating a Philanthropic Marketplace

Grant-making is only part of Legatum Global Development's humanitarian activities. In 1999, we noted the need for a transparent philanthropic marketplace where donors can easily identify the most effective and sustainable development projects. Finding no such marketplace, we established a philanthropic investment company which today provides investment grade research and due diligence on development initiatives all over the world.

Legatum is now focused on further broadening the social capital marketplace by creating an online meeting place for donors, recipients and implementers to freely exchange ideas, information and capital.
